What happens when you have health insurance — but still can't afford to see a doctor when you’re sick?

We spoke with more than 75 people around the United States, and they told us the same story: rising deductibles, copays, prescription drug costs, and unexpected medical bills are forcing them to delay seeking care, take on debt, and make impossible financial choices.

This short documentary from the Kitchen Table Project features real conversations with Americans from around the country about the growing crisis of out-of-pocket healthcare costs. Their stories reveal a common reality: having health insurance no longer guarantees affordable healthcare.

Additional policy resources coming soon

We’re working on a policy playbook focused on rising costs across the household budget, including healthcare, groceries, electricity, and housing.

In our effort to find the best solutions, we’re asking:

  • What are the root causes of high prices?

  • What are the biggest pain points that people are feeling?

  • What solutions would be most meaningful for American families?

We’ll release our work throughout the summer, so check back here for updates soon.
